The activity of the clergy of the Kursk Diocese in the spiritual and moral care of the flock in 1914–1916

Abstract

The analysis proposed in the article is based mainly on the materials of the Kursk Diocesan Gazette, which examines the main activities of the Kursk clergy and clergy in 1914–1916. The First World War. Special attention is given to the spiritual and moral support provided to the population of the province and to military personnel. The actions of the Kursk clergy in the early days following the declaration of war are described in detail. The article explores the staffing situation within the diocese resulting from the conscription of priests and church workers to the front. In wartime conditions, the clergy often had to respond to circumstances and new challenges as they arose. The article also analyzes the efforts of Kursk pastors to counter external misinformation that provoked public panic, as well as their methods of supporting those mobilized to defend the homeland and their families. Based on wartime letters from military chaplains, the article highlights the specific features of pastoral service on the front lines.
