Mutual insurance of church real estate in 1910–1917: according to the materials of Kadnikov district of Vologda diocese
Abstract
The article is devoted to the study of historical experience of fire insurance of immovable property, organized by the Russian Orthodox Church on the principles of reciprocity in the pre-revolutionary period. In the Russian historiography, this topic is little studied and undeservedly overlooked. The article is intended to shed light on the regional characteristics of the development insurance business of the spiritual department in Kadnikov district of the Vologda diocese in 1910–1917.
The source of scientific research Insurance documents deposited in archives and materials from pre-revolutionary publications of the Vologda Diocesan Gazette. The purpose of the article is to consider mutual insurance of church immovable property in the context of its practical implementation in Kadnikov district of the Vologda diocese.
Consideration is being given to the organization of mutual insurance at the district, evaluation of church property and calculation of insurance premiums, fire incidents, ratio of contributions and compensation for fire damage. The documents on insurance cases are used to analyze the possibility of building a new building with compensatory funds. The data obtained allows a comparative analysis of real estate insurance results for parishes and monasteries of the Kadnikov district with data on other districts of the Vologda diocese. The conclusion is that for parishes and monasteries in the Kadnikov district mutual insurance of real estate in 1911-1917 was less profitable than in the Russian Empire as a whole because insurance premiums were significantly higher than fire compensation.
